About Us

Hello and welcome to DC Northstar, a neighborhood blog for uptown, Washington, DC.  We keep our neighbors informed about events, meetings, and social activities in and around our community.

Moving On Up

Our family moved to Shepherd Park in 2010. While we were excited about having more yard space and access to amenities like Rock Creek Park, what really makes this a great place to live are the wonderful neighbors and friends we’ve met along the way.  The diverse mix of people from all walks of life truly makes this one of the most unique communities in America.  Some families had lived in the area for decades while others were newcomers like us.  What they all had in common is that they all made us feel welcome.

Keeping Neighbors Informed

A few years ago, a developer announced plans to build a new grocery store and apartments on Georgia Avenue NW near the Maryland border.  Some thought it was a great idea, but it turns out, many neighbors were against it.  There was a lot of division, confusion, and misinformation about the issue.  After a long back and forth, the grocery store project was canceled and the Target retail store was placed at that location instead.

That disagreement over the grocery store inspired us to start this blog.  We wanted to create a platform where everyone could learn about all of the important local news that doesn’t get covered in the major newspapers anymore: development issues, community meetings, real estate news, and more.  We feel that if all stakeholders get to have a say in important community matters, it is easier to develop solutions that are acceptable to everyone.  With the massive Walter Reed development project underway, having an outlet like this is more important than ever.

Building a Better Community

Since that time, we’ve created hundreds of blog posts and videos sharing some of the great things that go on in and around Shepherd Park, Takoma DC, Brightwood, and other neighborhoods in the uptown area.  We’ve interviewed small business owners and school leaders to share what they have to offer to the community.  As a licensed Realtor with Keller Williams, Jennell shares her expertise in residential real estate each month.  And Christopher attends many community meetings and writes articles recapping the action for those who cannot attend.  This is just a small way for us to give back to the community that we call home.

We’re always available to meet neighbors and learn about the new businesses, organizations, and events that are popping up in the area. If you have a news tip or have any questions about DC or Maryland real estate, feel free to reach out to Jennell (email | Instagram | Twitter).  If you’re curious about local civic news, just ask Christopher (email | Twitter). We will be more than happy to help you.

All the best,

Jennell and Christopher Alexander
