DC Council Seeks to permanently Close Upper Beach Drive to Cars

The DC Council is asking the National Park Service to permanently close the northern portion of Beach Drive in Rock Creek park to cars. Councilmember Anita Bonds, Janeese Lewis George, Brianne Nadeau, Brooke Pinto and Charles Allen have jointly proposed the “Sense of the Council Resolution Requesting the National Park Service Permanently Close Beach Drive to Cars Resolution of 2021.”

This portion of the road has been closed since the beginning of the Coronavirus Health Emergency.  The intent was to give residents space for socially distanced walking, bike riding and relaxation.  A community group found that more than 529  non-motorized park users per hour were making use of this stretch of roadway during a 12-day period this summer.

The proposed legislation can be found here: https://lims.dccouncil.us/Legislation/PR24-0212

Councilmember Janeese Lewis George will take part in two public discussions on this issue this week:
