Hot Spot of the Week: Washington Mystics Games at the Entertainment and Sports Arena

Washington Mystics Games at the Entertainment and Sports Arena

This week’s Hot Spot is Washington Mystics games at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Congress Heights. Throughout the franchise’s up-and-down twenty-year history, the team has always been one of the leaders in WNBA attendance. So, it was with some controversy and curiosity that the team owners and the city government decided to move the team from its downtown home at the Capital One Arena to a new, smaller arena east of the Anacostia River.Entertainment and Sports Arena

Approximately 75% through the home schedule for the 2019 season, I think it is safe to say the move has been a winner.  To be sure, the development of the team around superstar player Elena Delle Donne has been the biggest factor in the team’s current success. However, the decided home court advantage that the Mystics enjoy when 4,000 raucous fans pile into the gym keeps the team pumped from beginning to the end.  4,200 fans in a 4,200 seat building creates a better experience than 7,000 fans rattling around a 20,000 seat facility.

The team has gone out of its way to ensure the fans stay engaged throughout the game.  Every break in play in accompanied by a fan-centric activities like trivia contests, kid dancers and fan cams.  The walk from the parking lot or Metro station is lined with yellow-shirted “Ambassadors” whose job is to make fans feel comfortable in this new environment.  The DJ plays well-timed and appropriate music throughout the game.  The concessions are typical arena fare: nachos, hot dogs, pretzel, etc. Slightly overpriced, but nothing too egregious.  One thing they could do a little better is provide more game replays on the arena’s two video screens.

Bottom Line

The Washington Mystics gameday experience at the new Entertainment and Sports Arena is great for sports fans and families alike.  The intimate environment of the facility creates high-energy atmosphere.  The DJ, dancers and time-out activities enhance the experience as well.  I would recommend checking out of some of the Mystics remaining regular season games before the playoffs begin in September.
