DCNorthstar has been covering uptown meetings and events for nearly four years. During that time, we have learned a lot about how our local elected officials work. Being an effective representative requires a special collection of skills and talents and an amazing level of dedication.
Residents have the privilege to choose a neighbor to help them understand the intricacies of the vast city government. However, it is not easy to learn about the candidates for these local elections before we step into the voting booth.
As we did last election cycle, we invited all the candidates for Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 4A and 4B representing neighborhoods from North Portal Estates to Riggs Park to send us a video or answer a few questions to share their plans and ideas with the community.
We hope that you enjoy and are informed by this series. This video is with Joe Brennan, candidate for ANC 4B05 commissioner.
Hi, my name is Joe Brennan, and I’m running for ANC 4B05 commissioner here in Brightwood. Nationwide, we are still in the midst of a pandemic and its effects have been felt here in DC. The uncertainty around COVID-19 and the implications to both our public resources and services are the most important issue facing us. In running to represent 4B05, I want to ensure my neighbors are both informed of and have access to our community’s resources.
If elected, I want to focus on three areas: First, supporting each family and household. Secondly, maintaining and expanding DC’s infrastructure to support our community here. And lastly, continue to reimagine our shared spaces so the neighbors feel socially distant, but not isolated. Families should feel that they have all the tools necessary needed for their children’s education and wellbeing. This includes school resources, but also childcare, and support for working parents.
Likewise, our communities should continue to serve families who have grown up in this wonderful neighborhood and still call it home.
Lastly, I want to strive to make sure residents are being heard and support them in any way that I can. When I think about this community where my wife and I started our marriage, I am inspired by the commitment of my neighbors. Some of them have lived here for more than 25 years. I want to serve as your representative by meeting you anywhere you’re comfortable, either online or right around the block. As an ANC commissioner, my goal is to meet everyone and support my neighbors in any way I can.
Lastly, please vote. And if you are voting by mail, remember to flip over your ballot to vote in the ANC race, along with the state board of education for Ward 4 and Initiative 81. Thank you.
