Shepherd Elementary School celebrated its 28th Annual Shepherd Jazz Night on Friday evening, featuring the rhythmic sounds of Conga Soul, an Afro-Pan American jazz group. The band’s leader, Ivan G. Navas, is an educator, teaching percussion to youth and adults with a goal of empowering them using the drum. He believes the drum is a tool through which people and communities can find healing, motivation, and inspiration.
The Shepherd ES PTA and school administration founded Shepherd Jazz Night back in 1989 as a way to expose young people to truly unique American art form. This year’s event was billed as a tribute to Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie.
Thanks to the energy, perseverance and patience of Dr. Michael Wallace, the event’s founder, this event has continued on and grown to become a highly anticipated attraction in the Shepherd Park community.
As you can see in the video above, music is universal and cross-generational. These young children found a way to get lost in the rhythm, as though they had been hearing these beats all of their lives.
As parents, we appreciate the hard work that the PTA and the parent leaders put into this event. In addition to the fabulous music, the potluck dinner including fried chicken, pasta salad, spicy meatballs, desserts and more made for a perfect night out. We can’t wait until next year’s show!
