The 2017 “Springtime in Shepherd Park Soiree Fundraiser” was the biggest night of the year for neighborhood education supporters. Shepherd Elementary School supporters from across the city enjoyed this year’s sparkling event – and raised thousands of dollars in needed funds to purchase a new laptop cart for the school’s children.
This year’s event was held on Saturday, May 6th in the school’s beautiful and newly renovated atrium for the first time, to the delight of many. Dramatic lighting and exquisite decorations truly transformed this space and infused an inviting social atmosphere. Kudos to the planning committee for executing a flawless event!
Two of the school’s biggest supports, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Councilmember Brandon Todd stopped by to greet over 150 guests. After applauding their brief speeches, the guests joined in dining, dancing, taking selfies and bidding on dozens of worthy auction prizes.
There was something there for everyone during the silent auction: Crafts from students including a “hand painted” rug, inspired paintings, beautiful ceramics and more.
The evening was made complete by the live auction, emceed by parent and event chair Valarie Lewis Taylor. The energy in the room was palpable as each item hit the auction block. Two families dueled over box seats to a Washington Wizards NBA game. The same outcome occurred when the coveted “Principal for Day” prize came up: Principal Brawley herself took the mic to detail the benefits of this prize which will allow a current student to shadow her for an entire day. Bidding families were delighted when she revealed that the prize was doubled and that the children of both of the top two bidders would participate.
As you can see this was a big deal – and it’s always a positive outcome when we “party with a purpose” to reach a common goal to increase awareness and show support on a great cause.
The Committee extends Special Thanks to its Digital Connector Sponsor, Ledo Pizza.
