How to Be a Competitive Buyer in Today’s Housing Market

With so few houses for sale today in the DC area, it’s important to be prepared when you’re ready to buy a home.  Here are a few tips to help buyers prepare themselves for one of the most competitive markets that we’ve seen.

  • Meet with your lender early – Get pre-approved for a mortgage so you can move quickly when you’re ready to make an offer.
  • Know your must-haves and nice-to-haves – Neighborhood, Move-In Dates, Home features, schools, commuting time to work.  Think about these qualities at the beginning of your home search and create a plan to visit houses that meet your needs…and don’t waste time on those that don’t.
  • Be prepared for a bidding war – Understand the escalation process and be clear on what you can spend. Today, the average listing receives more than 3 offers!
  • Don’t let your emotions get the best of you – Trust your agent to be a voice of reason. They are professionals with everyday experience in our current market conditions.  Your friend or relative who last purchased a home a dozen years ago may not be the best source of up-to-date market information.
